Em uma série de tweets, Hideo Kojima descreveu como acabou escolhendo a engine Decima da Guerrilla Games para Death Stranding usando a corrida espacial como metáfora.
Basicamente, ele comenta que a corrida espacial ficou estagnada após a Guerra Fria. O motivo disso é o aumento do custo e o foco no desenvolvimento para a Terra em si. Entretanto, ele diz que gostaria de ir para a Lua e acabou encontrando a Guerrilla, cujo plano era ir para Marte. Usando a engine dela, a equipe de Kojima "fez o foguete", que permite ir a Marte e até mesmo a Júpiter.
